It depends on your itinerary. Louisville hotels near the Bourbon Trail give you the best access to urban distilleries and the widest selection of accommodations. Lexington is better suited for the central and eastern trail stops, including the Harrodsburg area. If you’re doing the full trail, consider splitting nights between both cities, or choosing Frankfort as a central Kentucky Bourbon Trail lodging base that’s equidistant from both.
Several properties sit within walking or a short drive of major distilleries. In Louisville, the Brown Hotel, Seelbach Hotel, and Galt House are classic downtown choices. In Bardstown, you’ll find boutique hotels and historic inns right in the heart of bourbon country. The 21c Hotel locations in Louisville and Lexington are popular picks for travelers who want design-forward Kentucky Bourbon Trail lodging with a built-in bar program.
Bardstown is often called the best base for Kentucky Bourbon Trail lodging because it puts you closest to the highest concentration of distilleries on the trail. However, travelers who prefer more dining and nightlife options, or who are flying in, often find Louisville the more practical choice. We recommend Bardstown for immersion, Louisville for convenience, and Frankfort for value.
Most guests plan 3 to 5 days to complete a meaningful portion of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The full KY Bourbon Trail passport experience includes over 40 distilleries, so a week-long trip is ideal if you want to collect every stamp. A long weekend (3 days) is enough to hit the major stops, Heaven Hill, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey, and Buffalo Trace, if you choose your Kentucky Bourbon Trail lodging strategically to minimize drive time between stops.
